There is no mistake that not only birds love the gourds, but also the bird lovers!
This is such a cheerful gourd it is impossible not to smile when you see it. Now, I'm not sure if birds smile but they do use bird house gourds for three to four clutches each year.
This gourd belongs to a new line of gourds I have begun for 2011. Each year I pick a new theme. This year the small ones will be accentuated. Whether bunnies or baby chicks, new life begins in the Spring!
You are taking a peek inside the nest in a barn when the babies have just hatched out. You can even see the three little chicks' tiny becks, ready for another meal. The wood slats are held together with those old nails.
Like all my gourds, this all weather gourd can be hung outdoors but we suggest you take it in during harsh winter months so it will last many more years. There are drain holes on the bottom and ventilation holes on the sides so the babies stay cool during the summer months.
There is no need to clean it out as the birds will just rearrange the twigs each year.
I include a cord so as soon as you open up your box, you will be able to go hang it outside for the waiting wrens.
Wrens can average 3 clutches a year, so you are in for a summer full of beautiful song birds that devour all those biting bugs!
